Class system- a natural urge
Are you of the opinion that the class system is an artificial creation and that humans would never create a class system if they were given an opportunity to start all over again? Contrary to what you think, it is not very difficult to start all over again. Just choose a group of children who do not have any social skills and use them as the basis of the experiment. Since these children do not have any idea of society works, the society they create will be one that is set up to scratch.
If the class system is artificial, then the children would not set up a system that resembles the one that we have in society today, right? If equality is something that comes naturally to all of us, then the society and rules that these children set up would be one that is based on equality without a class system, right?
Well, such experiments have been conducted in the past and people have discovered that a society of children is far crueler than the society that we adults have set up. Instead of adopting a generous approach towards equality, children adopt a meritocratic approach. They automatically divide themselves into leaders and followers.
The leaders lead and followers are expected to follow. Needless to say, power struggles are very common and children resort to various methods to put down the revolt. There is no violence but children often threaten ostracism of followers to keep them under control
These experiments have not been restricted to the social set up alone. It has been observed that even children like use of cosmetics to improve their appearance. They may not use fancy chemicals to improve their appearance but the desire to improve one’s appearance is always present.
Hence, it is not right to say that advertisements and websites of cosmetic makers encourage people to use cosmetics. Rather, it is a natural urge. Now that it has been comprehensively proved that we are not naturally attuned to equality, perhaps we can stop pretending that presence of the class system in our lives is an aberration.
